Sex-Life Solutions

  • Most books on sex sensationalise the possibility of amazing sexual success for everyone. The truth is, in the real world, many people suffer sex problems in silence. There is an urgent need for a book like Sex-Life Solutions, which gives straightforward answers to people who want understanding, clear direction and practical strategies.

In this book, sex therapist Jan Hall offers practical advice on how to think differently, talk together and solve sexual difficulties. With the help of case studies from her practice, she explains ways to overcome common anxieties, problems with performance or rejection, patterns from the past that can block a happier relationship, different beliefs about sex, and difficulties caused by mismatched libido or by busy, stressful lifestyles. Importantly, she helps men and women realise how the other may be thinking and feeling about such personal issues.

‘Every day I talk with couples who have sexual difficulties. Men can have problems with their erections or with premature or delayed ejaculation; women can find difficulties with painful sex or with orgasm. Then there are problems caused by the beliefs we’ve grown up with: that doing certain things when we have sex is “dirty” or that sex should only happen in a certain “way”.

‘Most difficulties can be overcome, but first you have to learn how to talk about them together. I aim to give people confidence to talk about problems in this intimate area and learn how to feel safe with their sexuality. This is what really needs to happen, as all too often I’ve seen these problems lead to the breakdown of a relationship.’ Dr Jan.

‘A smart sex book that is a must for anyone who wants practical, realistic solutions for just about any problem.’  Tracey Cox, author of Hot Sex.

    Leading therapist offers sex-life solutions

Times have changed. In the past, we were led to believe that everyone had an amazing, utterly satisfying sex-life. Problems were never discussed, regarded as taboo. The publication of Nicki Gemmel’s revealing book, The Bride Stripped Bare, has gone some way in highlighting what women really feel about sex. More recently, Gary Sweet spearheaded the need for men to discuss erectile dysfunction. None of this is new to Melbourne sex therapist Dr Janet Hall, author of a new book on everyday sexual difficulties. For over thirty years Dr Hall has been working with people’s relationship issues, most of which have involved sexual problems.

‘People’s sex lives’, says Dr Hall, ‘are complicated by their fears and inadequacies and the baggage of their past relationships. The sad fact is that most people suffer their sex-life problems in silence.

‘Every day I talk with couples who have sexual difficulties. Men can have problems with their erections or with premature or delayed ejaculation; women can find difficulties with painful sex or with orgasm. Then there are problems caused by the beliefs we’ve grown up with: that doing certain things when we have sex is “dirty” or that sex should only happen in a certain “right” way.
